Current Events in Physical Education and Sports

Being a physical education teacher and a coach at the high school I think this blog could be used in a couple different ways. First, I would use this blog to post events and important information on different skills and or techniques to become more proficient at the games or activities that we are learning in the class. Also, I could use this blog to keep my students up to date with current events in the sporting news world. Finally, I could use this blog to help students that are struggling with physical education by relating as many different activities or groups as possible to find a common ground with some students.

  1. Most people would agree that high school students often have a poor body image. What I really appreciated about your post was your desire to provide students with some of the tools they can use in class to feel more successful.

In your previous post, you mentioned a desire to help students with their quest to physical fitness. I was wondering if you had given any thought to having quest speakers on your blog. Will Richardson tells us that ". . .in a world that is moving more and more toward a business model of the collaborative construction of content, learning to work with far-flung collaborators is becoming an important literacy" (Richardson, 2009). I see the possibility of having athletes, nutritionists, personal trainers or other coaches making a post and having students respond with questions and/or comments as having a positive impact. Do you think this might be a viable option? What legal ramifications do you foresee as being problematic?

  2. Jsorg1,
Thanks for the comments on my blog! It is very difficult to get people to step outside the box and come into my world of Physical Education. I think your idea of asking other teachers and even athletes to post on my blog with some questions for high school students would be a great idea. I could go in many different directions. The most important topic would be of course helping students to understand their bodies and how best to take care of them. I could also collaborate with our health teacher on this assignment.
Realistically, this idea could not work in the near future in the district that I work in. For one, I could never ask our students to have work done for my class using the internet because many of my students do not have computers or the internet at home. Although, it may be possible to sign up for library time to possibly have them use the resources in there to get this done. The downside of this is that using the computers actually tales away from the 30 minutes of required Academic Learning Time (ALT), which in this case is being physically active. In addition, our library is a struggle to get into because of its size and taking a spot up for P.E. may not work.
I think one way that I could promote this is if I could find current athletic bloggers, for example I have been blogging on an outside site http://pacetrek.blogspot.com and this guy is a phenomenal athlete and inspiration to all.
Could you please clarify to me what you mean as far as “legal ramifications”? Thanks!
